Namaste,
In corporate, bosses promise bonuses (orally) for work done/ targets achieved. Nothing is given in writing. They like to keep you on edge. Casually, they mention, 'is time raise pakka' (this time you will surely get a raise). That carrot lingers in the subordinate's mind. Hurrah, when the appraisal time comes, the boss pinpoints the work not done and why raise is out of the question. The subordinates feel that is the norm and give their juniors the same behavior.
During my training sessions with the CEOs, I keep repeating actions speak louder than words. Learn to keep your word. If you told someone you will give a raise, give it. You choose to decide if you want to be a person of shallow words or the one who keeps the word. In my personal life also, I have noticed that such behavior gets repeated.
Example
1. People say, they will get back and they never will.
2. People say, 'let us catch up' and not give the date and time to meet.
3. People say, 'I will call you in ten minutes, and the call never comes.' And you don't know what exactly happened.
4. People borrow money from you and you give in good faith. They say, 'I will return it within six months' and six years pass.
These are the people who can never be trusted. For trust to develop, one needs to put one's words into action.
My book 'Buddha Vacana' discusses how words can be put into action to develop trust and build a harmonious relationship.
